He lived a simple but happy life, albeit in the shadow of his unknown father on record. He married Filomena with whom he had three children. He was a very charismatic person, known and respected by those around him. Today, even though he is no longer with us, he is the inspiration of the Ferreira family: an exemplary father, creator of a fantastic legacy, the Pôpa family, with fundamental family values. His greatest dream was to be recognized and valued for his work and (of course) by his father. He never achieved this in his lifetime. A generation later, his son José Ferreira (Zeca do Pôpa) made it happen by buying part of Quinta do Vidiedo, located in Adorigo, Tabuaço, in the heart of the Douro Wine Region. In homage to his father, he changed the name of the property to Quinta do Pôpa. Later, his friend Luís Pato, a winemaker from Bairrada and lover of the Douro, offered his technical knowledge to the family, challenging the third generation Pôpa to expand this dream.

The Pôpa team is known for its ambitious quality standards, knowing in advance that everything in nature needs time and respect. This blend is created annually through the selection of the most expressive native grape varieties of the year, from the same partners and vineyards referenced; however the differentiation of this range is in the choice of lower quotas, of lower altitude and with a higher degree of maturation; as well as in the plots, of greater age and seriousness.

This wine goes well with red meats with rich, smooth flavours – some fish with structure and fat. The oak pops up, but the acidity and power easily counter it. It's not the fleshiest red, but it handles itself well with some appealing mid-palate finesse. Tightly wound, this looks like a great deal, a wine that can punch above its weight. The structure might be a bit ahead of the fruit, but they both do well. This should age reasonably well, but you can dive in soon. It's not astringent. It would certainly help to give it at least a year in the bottle, however. This is not the best wine here, but it competes with the Touriga for the title "best value" of the group. It will age well in bottle.

90 Points - Wine Advocate
The 2019 Singular is 45% a field blend from old vines (with grapes like Avesso, Malvasia and Rabigato and vines ranging 60 to 100 years old), plus 24% Alvarinho, 11% Malvasia Fina and 10% each of Avesso and Arinto. It was partly (15% of the juice) aged for six months in used French oak. It comes in at 13% alcohol, 5.2 grams of residual sugar and 6.8 grams of total acidity. The acidity provides good balance for the modest sugar, so this still shows dry. The latest release in the mini-vertical this issue, this has the advantage of freshness first and foremost. Just smelling it makes this seem exuberant and lively. You can tell it is the youngest without tasting it. It doesn't seem as big or as complex as the 2017, but it is far more refreshing. It makes the more stolid 2018 look dull. This 2019 looks like it has some upside potential because of its superior freshness. Let's lean up a bit just for that potential, but it certainly is true that the 2017 shows far better today. This runs nine euros in Portugal.
