The 127-acre property with 57 acres planted, is comprised of multiple hills of various elevation and complex soils. Because of its proximity to the ocean, the vineyard has clear warm days and drastic cool nighttime temperatures which increases the time of the grape’s maturation cycle providing fruit that creates a more complex and balanced wine. The defining feature was a heat wave that settled down over the west coast for an extended visit. Let’s face it, this visitor overstayed their welcome by at least a week! It ended up splitting the season into three distinct harvests. The first brought in fruit that was ready before the real heat kicked in. This included our white varieties, usually the first grapes we pick at James Berry Vineyard, and our early ripening vineyards like Paderewski Vineyard. Then there was the middle harvest, when we brought in fruit knowing that after two weeks of hot weather, needed to come off. The flavors were finally there and if we left them much longer we would be picking raisins instead of grapes. So a chunk of fruit came in at this point, and thankfully we are well versed in co-fermentation, because varieties like Mataro, Carignan and Touriga National that are immune to heat really helped to buffer the varieties like Syrah, Graciano and Grenache, that are a little more temperamental when it comes to adverse conditions. Co-ferm was the name of the game during this part of the harvest, almost every lot of Grenache was 40% Mataro from the get-go. A marriage made in heaven. The last part of harvest included blocks that despite the heat, weren’t close, forcing us to let them ride. After the heat passed, we went out into the field with little manicuring scissors and actually dropped berry by berry the ones that had turned to raisins. A real PITA and we ended up losing 40% of that crop, but what we did eventually bring into the winery was sublime!

When it came time to blend up these 22s we were blown away. They had matured into gorgeous wines. Very aromatic in the red fruit spectrum, not much of that spicy pepper you get in the wet cool years, but real pleasers. If you’ve enjoyed our 2017s, you know exactly what you’re getting with the 2022s. They will open for business early and stay open late. The tannins are soft, but one thing the heat does is concentrate everything, so they are a hedonistic mouthful.

98 Points - Jeb Dunnuck
The 2022 G2 Vineyard checks in as 44% Grenache, 19% Mataro, 18% Graciano, 14% Syrah, and 5% Carignan that’s clearly from one of the leading sites on the west side of Paso Robles. Blackberries, red plums, Asian spice, pepper, candied violets, and incense-like nuances all shine in this killer wine. One, we have long had a passion for Rhone inspired blends. Two, Paso Robles is ‘America’s Rhone’. Those parts were easy. Our mantra was to find a vineyard site that could produce ultra-premium, limited production, Rhone and Priorat style wines that would be a true expression of the site. After two years of evaluating many potential sites (almost to exasperation), we finally found our Holy Grail. The analysis of 42 soil pits on this site revealed coveted limestone with low vigor soils. This, combined with the high elevation and steep slopes, was the unique and remarkable property that would produce the premium fruit we desired. Critical to our goal is a winery that can manifest the quality of the terrific fruit and create a world-class wine. We also believe that the Tasting Room should be an environment much like your home living room, where you can relax with friends and family while enjoying our Law Estate wines. As we continue to showcase and share the best that our estate has to offer, we will always be honored to have you joining us in the adventure.

Winemaker
Philipp Pfunder

Grape / Blend
36% Grenache, 33% Mourvèdre, 31% Syrah

Origin
Paso Robles, California

Winemaker's Tasting Notes
19 months in a mix of Foudre, puncheon, and barrel, with 42% new French oak, lending a subtle polish to its ripe fruit core. She worked side-by-side with some of the finest restaurateurs and Michelin-starred chefs, cultivating her zeal for fine food and wine. They became the proud stewards of 50 acres of paradise-on-earth in the Willow Creek District of Paso Robles. It is now a veritable winemaker’s dream with nearly 40,000 vines planted in 24 distinct blocks. In 2022, their estate grew to include 26 acres of dramatic landscape in the Adelaida District. Both vineyard sites have breathtakingly beautiful slopes, calcareous soils and strong marine influence. Simply put, the Sahis believe that these vineyards are legendary. Great rainfall in the winter and spring, and then a long, gentle growing season with no heat spikes to make us fret. The only challenge with '23 occurred when all the fruit from our vineyards were ripe and ready to go at the same time! That was a bit chaotic. Alas, the wines all shine. They are similar to the 2019 vintage, with the great spice and savory notes you get from a cooler season with a long hang time—along with perfect ripeness, which is what happens when you grow grapes in a perfect place like California’s Central Coast.

When it came time to blend up these 22s we were blown away. The Chenin stood out because the plants stand a few feet taller and the trunks are double the diameter of the neighboring blocks. It turns out these vines were the last remaining of an original fifty acres planted in 1974.

In 2018, Natalie traveled to Clarksburg, a region in California that is championing Chenin Blanc, and sourced a few tons of fruit from a twenty-six-year-old vineyard. The following vintage, she added another site: Shell Creek Vineyard in Paso Robles. Shell Creek grows vines planted by the Sinton family in the early 70’s, and has one of the largest holdings of Chenin Blanc in the area with about twenty-five acres.

The experience of producing Chenin from multiple different regions made her believe that terroir, compared to winemaking style, had an equal if not greater effect on the underlying character of the wine. The desire to understand more about this grape was a slow burning fire.

In 2020 Natalie made the decision to emulate Chenin from the Swartland region of South Africa. There, many producers pick when the grapes are lower in sugar and higher in acid. The wines are fermented dry in neutral oak and malolactic fermentation is encouraged, allowing the natural acidity to mellow and the wines to be bottled unfiltered without the risk of secondary fermentation occurring. The Jurassic vineyard naturally lent itself to this model so the program was performed.

Winemaker
Natalie Brown

Grape / Blend
Chenin Blanc

Origin
Central Coast, California

Tasting Notes
A blend of the three Chenin site that we work with on the central coast. It didn’t take long as he slowly began to appreciate the depth and complexity that carefully sculpted whites can deliver. It's approachable now but will continue to evolve in bottle over the next 10+ years.

Product size: 750ml

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0275/0441/0666/files/Epoch-Estate-Wines-Authenticity-Paso-Robles-California-2018.jpg?v=1757422236
levo-el-paso-de-robles-white-blend-california-2023
Levo, El Paso De Robles White Blend, California, 2023

Overview of the Wine
The Central Coast of California is a blessed region, naturally endowed with diverse microclimates that produce wines of exceptional power and density.
