Martin Franzen, hailing from the Mosel, with experience as head of operations at Schlossgut Diel in the Nahe and Gut Nagelsforst in Baden, took over winemaking responsibility from Hans-Günther Schwarz in 2001. In an effort to showcase terroir and varietal character, Müller-Catoir has adopted the following philosophy of winegrowing: “Vines were grown by natural methods with organic fertilization, permanent green cutting that gets more and more radical every summer, and ever-greater selective harvesting with hand-picking of grapes for even the most “basic” kabinett wine – all these measures cannot help but produce only a small yield of wines with a mineral note, a filigree acidity structure and exotic fruit aromas.” The estate began an organic conversion in 2007 and completed their first organic vintage in 2009. The vineyards in Haardt are composed of primary rock (urgestein) and sandstone, with an increasing proportion of gravel lower on the slopes. Vineyards of Gimmeldingen contain more loess and sand, while the vineyards of Mussbach are the most gravelly. Müller-Catoir also bottles several “micro parcels”; one of which, the Breumel in den Mauern, is a monopole inside the Burgergarten which was first planted 700 years ago, and is also one of the oldest vineyards in the Pfalz.

Müller-Catoir was a pioneer of reductive winemaking in Germany. The estate implements a gentle crush, a long skin contact, slow gentle pressing, and then ferments at warmer than customary fermentation temperatures in stainless steel. The wine was still very young at the GG tasting in Wiesbaden in August when it showed a good yet still robust finish, but it was only slightly more open and refined in December this year. 13% stated alcohol. Consolidation, technology, regulation, foreign investment, globalization, and many other factors (all in the name of progress), threaten the great agricultural tradition of winegrowing in France, arguably the world’s greatest winegrowing culture. Few domaines in France embody this way of life more ably and proudly than Domaine Albert Boxler in Niedermorschwihr. Jean Boxler, many generations removed from his ancestor of the same name that moved here from Switzerland in 1673, currently rules the roost at this humble yet incredibly exciting domaine. Intense and serious about his land, his craft, and his wine, Jean is the genius behind what are certainly some of the finest white wines in Alsace (and the world).

The family’s holdings are centered around the ancient village of Niedermorschwihr in the Haut-Rhin, dominated by the imposing granite hillside grand cru, Sommerberg. Jean vinifies micro-parcels within this cru separately, de-classifying some into his Réserve wines and producing multiple bottlings of Sommerberg from the different lieux-dits depending on the vintage. Sommerberg gives racy, intensely structured, very long-lived wines. Riesling, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Blanc are the specialties of the domaine, Jean also produces one of Alsace’s best Crémants (and Edelzwickers), an incredible Gewurztraminer grown in limestone, and some of the most hauntingly pure Vendanges Tardives and SGNs in all of Alsace. If that weren’t enough, the Boxlers also own land in the powerful grand cru Brand, the ultimate counterpart to their holdings in Sommerberg.

The Sommerberg hillside terminates in Jean’s driveway, making it easy to basically live in the vineyards, ensuring exceptionally healthy fruit year after year. After harvest, the wines are vinified and aged in old foudres in a small cellar underneath the family home until bottling. Not much has changed over the centuries; not much has needed to. Tasting through the entire range of Boxler’s wines is ample proof of the fact that Alsace, along with Burgundy, is the source of the world’s most complex, exciting white wines, and will probably always be.

Organic.

Winemaker
Jean Boxler

Grape / Blend
Riesling

Origin
Alsace, France

Winemaker's Tasting Notes
Foie gras, blue cheese, spicy food, curries.

Purity, persistence, lengthening... For three centuries and across 13 generations, the family has produced wines that are structured, longlived, fruity, elegant and balanced: the celebrated Trimbach style. The family personally looks after each operation, from planting to harvests and from vinification to bottling. The viticultural origin of the Trimbach family dates back to 1626, when Jean Trimbach, was recognized as a citizen of Riquewihr. From then on, the Trimbach’s were renowned for their wine-growing. Maison Trimbach’s vineyards are all situated around Ribeauville (Ribeauville, Hunawihr, Bergheim, Rorschwihr, Riquewihr and Mittlewihr). They benefit from the unique Alsatian microclimate, thanks to the Vosges Mountains protection, which preserves the plain from the rain. The vineyards were planted on the Ribeauville’s fault line that fractured 50 million years ago between the Vosges Mountain range and the Black Forest offering a mosaic of terroirs including the complex calcareous limestone and bio-degraded seashell fossils called “Muschelkalk”. Trimbach Réserves are the result of a rigorous selection from mostly old vineyards in Ribeauvillé and the surrounding villages, producing more complex wines with longer ageing potential.

In the 1960’s, the Trimbach family decided that it was time for a second great dry Riesling, thus Cuvée Frédéric Émile, the signature wine of the Trimbach family was created.

The plot of the Frédéric Émile straddles the Grands Crus Osterberg and Geisberg in Ribeauvillé, overlooking the winery. Generous yet refined on the palate, this is a more classical Riesling compared to 2018, so it's a bit more austere, less textured but more precise and incredibly saline. The tannins are still biting a bit but already playing with the saline acidity, and I assure you that this is a great and balanced classical Riesling that will make its way over the years. Personally, I adore this style (or vintage) since it shows the finesse and purity of the clos rather than its power and richness at this stage. Keep it for at least 10 or, if you can, 20 years. Tasted at the domaine in April 2024 and again on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Clos Ste Hune at the beginning of November, with the same result, but another note: Coming with the ancient label, the intensely yellow colored 2019 Clos Sainte Hune is clear, bright, fresh and savory, very intense yet most of all deep, rich and precise on the terroir-driven nose. Based on very, very old vines, this is a full-bodied, rich and densely textured, quite powerful and tightly structured Riesling with lots of salts and the depth and power of Trimbach’s east/southeast-facing 1.67-hectare plot within the Grand Cru Rosacker. The finish is very intense and shows even marzipan aromas as well as great vitality and mineral freshness.

98 Points - Vinous
The 2019 Riesling Clos Saint Hune will be released later this year. That pure, tell-tale chamomile tincture lift is incisive, transporting crushed tansy. The acidity strikes first: linear, clear-cut, pristine, sharp as a Japanese blade, uncompromising and taut, followed not by fruit but by herbal savor and limestone coolness. Imagine stones saturated with fresh, cool tisane of chamomile and yarrow, laced with saltiness, edged with a touch of pepper, intense and concentrated.

This includes a program of wild herbs and grasses planted as cover crops and intensive canopy management to ensure the optimal health and ripeness of our grapes.

Winemaker
Maximin von Schubert

Grape / Blend
Riesling

Origin
Mosel, Germany

Winemaker's Tasting Notes
The GG from the Abtsberg is already very balanced on the nose. Its clear minerality and stony character harmonize perfectly with yellow stone fruit such as apricots and mirabelle plums. A subtle yeasty note from spontaneous fermentation gives the first indication of its origin. Swiveled yellow flowers are added. The palate shows a wine with a gripping character and great balance. Initially, stone fruit such as white peach and yellow nectarine appear in combination with the finesse of white flowers. The fruit is perfectly integrated by its vivid but defined acidity. Its enormous "stoniness", subtle salted lemon and floral accents give the powerful wine a wonderful playfulness and finesse.

96 Points - Vinous
The 2025 Riesling Maximin Grünhäuser Abtsberg Grosses Gewächs for now holds back on the nose. The palate, however, shows its slate-driven sleekness right away. This is stone bathed in ripe Meyer lemon and mandarin, tingling and glistening with juicy citric freshness and aroma for now, but resting absolutely in stone, in solidity, in that beautiful timelessness of the slope. It gives us charm for now, but really is all about eternity. A wonderful wine with citric cut and such stony substance.
