After the total destruction of the property by the Duke d’Epernon in the 1600’s, Count Blaise de Suduiraut replanted the vineyard and restored the estate to its former glory. On 18 April 1855 the estate was classed as a Premier Cru during the official wine classification programme in the Gironde winegrowing area. AXA Millésimes acquired Suduiraut in 1992 with the aim of preserving and perpetuating the estate's remarkable tradition of vineyard management and winemaking. First, the intense nose reveals notes of candied fruits, in particular apricot and melon, with hints of smokiness and minerals. Then, notes of vanilla and passion fruit emerge. The attack is round and fresh. Apricot and melon return on the palate with a very soft, non-sugary sensation, like an acid drop. The finish is smooth with notes of candied apricot. At the winery, fully restored Rothschild in 1989, installed pneumatic presses that help a thorough treatment of the fruit. In winemaking used small barrels so that each vintage can be individually controlled and evaluate it. Before aging wines undergo a rigorous selection, selected as the "Grand Vin" ripen up to 26 months in oak barrels, of which about half is updated every year. If the quality does not match, the wine is classified as a second - "Carmen de Rёssek", named after the first owners - Karm de Langon monks. Chateau also produces wine "Clos Laber" and "Chateau de Cos," as well as a dry white wine "R de Rieussec", made from grapes nebotritizirovannogo and consisting of roughly equal proportions of the varieties Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc. It is the natural expression of a great terroir. Man simply reveals it… The terroir determines everything”, explains Olivier Bernard. This approach, based upon an absolute respect for the terroir and the fruit, is put into practice through an endless pursuit of quality through research and constant refinement.

Just like at Chevalier, the harvest at Clos des Lunes is carried out by hand, with extreme care and several passes through the vines as the grapes reach maturity. It takes place in the morning. This level of precision throughout the picking and sorting processes makes it possible to obtain perfectly ripe fruit.

In the winery, the purity of the fruit therefore allows for a simple, natural vinification that enables the individual properties of the terroir to reveal themselves. Following the precise and plot-by-plot approach to harvesting, vinification takes place in small thermo-regulated vats of 50 hectolitres or in barrels. This is determined according to the quality of wine, following a very gentle, slow pressing of the grapes.

Winemaker
Olivier Bernard

Grape / Blend
70% Sémillon and 30% Sauvignon Blanc

Origin
Sauternes, Bordeaux, France

Winemaker's Tasting Notes
Lune d’Argent is the heart of Clos des Lunes’ production. The palate has citrus charm sans any flat aspects one might expect from the hot and dry summer weather, reflecting the common refrain that the small grapes concentrated acidity - with a low pH of 3.22 - just as they did ripeness. For me, the wine qaulity punches way above the cost.

93 Points - James Suckling
Lovely salty character with crunch and freshness.
