Created in 1553 by Jean de Pontac, Haut-Brion was the first wine of Bordeaux's history to have the same name as the domain. At that time, the wines were sold anonymously. First chateau to practice techniques which are now unavoidable, such as racking or aging in oak barrels. Therefore, it will be the only classified Grand Cru in the Graves appellation in 1855, and is number 1 of course! There is no small vintage at Haut-Brion, owned by the Dillon family since 1935. In 1983, the Dillon family bought La Mission Haut-Brion, Haut-Brion's neighbour. It is always exciting to compare the different vntages of the property. In great vintages, it is perfectly able to age for several decades. Some vintages, such as the 1961 or 1989, show the incredible potential of Château Haut Brion, one of the greatest red wines in the world. Limited yields and a long maturation of 22 months in new oak barrels contribute to the production of this magnificent wine. Haut Brion develops velvety notes of ripe blackcurrant and has a mineral profile with legendary finesse. In its best vintages, it can be aged for several decades. Some of its vintages, such as the 1961 and the 1989, demonstrate how Château Haut Brion can figure among the best red wines in the world.

92 Points - Jeff Leve
Spicy. honey-tinted oranges and lemons, with notes of flowers and spice on the nose and palate. Benedictine monks from Sainte-Croix abbey in Bordeaux replanted and renovated the estate in the 18th century. They took advantage of the exceptionally pale, clear color of the white wine to label it as "Carbonnieux mineral water", which they then proceeded to ship to the sultan of Turkey.

Marc Perrin acquired and restored the chateau in 1956. His son, Antony, currently manages the estate. The gravelly soil at Carbonnieux is perfectly drained thanks to the Eau Blanche stream that carries away any excess water. The 85 hectares of vines are evenly divided between red and white wine varieties. The white wine is fermented and aged in barrel for 10 months. The red wine is aged for 15 to 18 months in barrel, depending on the quality and characteristics of the vintage.

Winemaker
Andréa Perrin

Grape / Blend
68% Sauvignon Blanc, 32% Semillon

Origin
Pessac-Leognan, Bordeaux, France

Winemaker's Tasting Notes
The wine has a pale yellow color. It is the natural expression of a great terroir. Man simply reveals it… The terroir determines everything”, explains Olivier Bernard. It takes place in the morning. This level of precision throughout the picking and sorting processes makes it possible to obtain perfectly ripe fruit.

In the winery, the purity of the fruit therefore allows for a simple, natural vinification that enables the individual properties of the terroir to reveal themselves. Following the precise and plot-by-plot approach to harvesting, vinification takes place in small thermo-regulated vats of 50 hectolitres or in barrels. This is determined according to the quality of wine, following a very gentle, slow pressing of the grapes.

Winemaker
Olivier Bernard

Grape / Blend
70% Sémillon and 30% Sauvignon Blanc

Origin
Sauternes, Bordeaux, France

Winemaker's Tasting Notes
Lune d’Argent is the heart of Clos des Lunes’ production.
