Born of a back-and-forth between two villages on either side of the river Marne, just to the northwest of Epernay, it all started with two women, Victoire Garnier from Mardeuil and Berthe Heucq from Fleurey-la Riviere. It was in the post-war period, as winemakers were coming back to their land, that they recovered their vineyards and began to market their champagne.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the 1950s, their respective grandsons added to the family farms. Medium to full-bodied, it's juicy and so tasty on opening, with an inviting nature, a refined and peppery mousse, and wonderful sapidity and density throughout. It’s an interesting wine to taste for a number of reasons. There's good aromatic presence and fine harmony, yet the Bas-Bauchets is not especially complex or distinctive. It strikes me as a wine better suited for blending rather than a Meunier that can carry on its own, even if there is plenty to like.
